Music
is in Aspiring Opera Singer's Blood"
The New Jersey Star Ledger
The
National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts has awarded Susan
Santiglia a 2000-2001 Astral Career Grant. She was one of five artists
to receive it. Santiglia said she is thrilled to receive support
and enthusiasm for her aspirations. "When you're trying to make a
career in the performing arts, just the support is enough," said
Santiglia. "They look at the work you're trying to do and think -
we want to support that."
Opera
Life
When Santiglia entered an international voice competition for the New
Jersey State Opera, she was selected by Artistic Director Alfredo
Silipigni to participate in the New Jersey State Opera Educational
Division, a program intended to bring opera to youngsters. The
Educational Division performed a contemporary version of The Magic Flute
in various schools, from Paterson to South Jersey. "It's a great
program! It helps young singers trying to get experience and it creates
future audiences," said Santiglia.
Santiglia was also invited to debut in Carmen, which she performed at
the New Jersey Performing Arts Center this past summer. On November 19,
Santiglia will take part in the opera company's 35th Anniversary Gala
Concert, performing "Senza Mamma" from Suor Angelica by
Giacomo Puccini.
Musical
Family
Santiglia's aunt was an opera singer, and another aunt is a pop singer.
She remembers, at age six, watching an opera singer on television and
telling her father, "I can do that," then attempting to sing
high operatic notes.
"It's natural - it's in my blood," she said.
From
the Heart
"I sing very much from the heart. The purpose is to affect people.
I have to convey the character, whether it's sad or happy."
